3 Ways to Trim Summer Utility Costs

Summer is the time for barbecues, corn on the cob, concerts, fireworks, and spending time with friends and family. There aren’t many things that can put a damper on the summers of homeowners in Fredericksburg, Virginia, but high utility bills definitely don’t help. Hot weather means using the air conditioner more often, and that means more money out of your pocket. If you want to make the rest of the summer stress-free, you need to trim those summer utility costs in areas where you may be wasting energy. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Cut Vampire Energy

Your air conditioner isn’t the only thing sapping power in the summer. Did you know that even when your electronics are turned off, as long as they’re still plugged in, they’ll sap power? You’re paying for power that you’re not even using. Cut this wasted power (also called vampire energy) by unplugging electronics when you’re done with them or plugging them into a power strip that you can turn off at the end of the day.

Conduct HVAC Maintenance

Your high utility costs may not just be a result of using the AC more often, they may actually be a sign of issues somewhere in your home’s HVAC system. If you haven’t already scheduled a maintenance checkup, now’s the perfect time to make an appointment. Regular maintenance, conducted at least twice a year, increases the efficiency of your HVAC system and ensures that everything is functioning as it should.

Cool Efficiently

What’s the point of blasting the air conditioning even when you’re not home? Once again, that’s just wasting energy. Install a programmable thermostat and program your AC to let the home get a little warmer while you’re away. Thanks to this handy technology, you can also program it to cool things down before you get home for the night.
